Heather Mills McCartney

Heather Mills McCartney is a patron of Adopt-A-Minefield and a United Nations Goodwill
Ambassador. Ms. McCartney has won numerous awards including the inaugural UNESCO
Children in Need Award.  In 2002 she released her updated autobiography, A Single Step
in North America and donated the earnings to Adopt-A-Minefield. Ms. McCartney is also
involved in the campaign to stop the international trade in dog and cat fur.

Sarah Bernhardt

Sarah Bernhardt, born in France began her successful stage career in 1862, moved to
London to establish herself as a leading actress and later become a pioneer actress in
silent movies. In 1915, ten years after a serious injury, her right leg was amputated
confining her to a wheelchair for several months. Nevertheless, she continued to act,
using a wooden prosthetic limb.

Ms. Mayer is a technical and business writer. After surviving a stroke, she wrote One
Handed in a Two Handed World
, her step by step guide on how to do just about everything
with one hand. Her next book, Teaching me to Run, explains the how and why she took
up running with the American Stroke Association marathon team.

Elizabeth Dole

Elizabeth Dole is the United States senator from North Carolina.  Her impressive credentials
include a Master's degree in education and government from Harvard and a law degree from
Harvard Law School. In 1983 she was the first woman to hold the position of Secretary of
Transportation in President Reagan's cabinet.  In 1991 Ms. Dole become the second woman
since founder Clara Barton to serve as President of the American Red Cross.  Her husband
long term senator from Kansas and former presidential candidate Robert Dole was twice
wounded during World War II and lost the use of one arm.  Today, Mr. Dole often carries a pen
in the hand of his paralyzed right arm as a signal that he is incapable of shaking hands with
that arm.  In the book The Doles: Unlimited Partners, written by the couple, they express
their experiences and political views.

Patricia Neal

Patricia Neal born in 1926 was an academy award winning actress. In 1965 she suffered cerebral
aneurysms while pregnant and was in a coma for three weeks. She subsequently relearned to
walk and talk.  In 1978 the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville dedicated the
Patricia Neal Rehabilitation Center in her honor. In 1988 Ms. Neal published an autobiography
titled As I am.
