Musical
Hat
My mother, Sarah, spends much time
in the common area of her nursing home so that the nursing
staff can keep an eye on her. The staff and few residents who enjoy
soap operas, sports and game shows seem to have greater clout than the
nonverbal residents who prefer familiar music, especially the
sing-a longs and old movie musicals. Sarah did not tolerate headphones.
The solution is the Musical Hat.
First I attached the
CD player to the top of the hat with Velcro. The player is
actually quite light. I wrapped up the extra wires to keep them out of
the way.
Next, I cut holes in
the sides of the hat, poked the head phones through and attached with
duct tape on the top.
The ear phones are about an inch away from her ears so that when the
volume is on at the highest level it is comfortable. I keep the
sound track of Fiddler on the Roof in the player so that the staff only
need to push one button and Sarah is happy.
